Who needs a building permit?

1 and 2 family houses, Commercial Buildings, All additions and alterations, decks, Manufactured homes, accessory buildings.

How long is a building permit good for?

24 months

What building projects are exempt from a building permit?

Re-siding, re-roofing, other projects less than $50,000 (but it still may needs an electrical inspection, see electrical info below)


For a new building project there are the following fees:

  1. Permit administration fee $50
  2. application assistance fee $50 if needed
  3. Plan review fee $80/hr.
  4. State of Wisconsin dwelling seal $35
  5. Building inspection fee for a Residential or commercial property is determined by using the current ICC Building Valuation Data Cost x square foot per group / category.

EXAMPLE: A Residential dwelling

Using ICC Feb. 2019 Building Valuation Data the inspection fee is calculated as follows:

  1. Group VB R‐3 Living area                                  $0.46 x sq. ft.
  2. Group VB R‐3 Garage                                       $0.18 x sq. ft.
  3. Group VB R‐3 Unfinished Basement            $0.08 x sq. ft.
  4. Group VB S‐2 Storage building                      $0.23 x sq. ft.
  5. Decks and open porches                                 $0.10 x sq. ft

The Inspection fee calculation is 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5

Minimum inspection fee is $160

Who needs an electrical permit?

SPS 316.012 no electrical wiring project may commence unless the owner of the premises where the installation is to occur or their agent holds a permit from the designated inspection agency if the electrical project involves the installation of new or addition to any electrical service, feeder, or branch circuit serving any of the following:

  1. A farm.
  2. A public building, structure, or premises.
  3. A place of employment.
  4. A campground.
  5. A manufactured home community.
  6. A public marina, pier, dock, or wharf.
  7. A recreational vehicle park.
  8. non-UDC building or structure

How long is an electrical permit good for?

12 months

Who needs an electrical inspection?

SPS 316.013 [All] electrical wiring installations shall be subject to inspection   *Including electrical wiring projects not requiring a permit.

PSC 114.003 [All] utilities must obtain proof (Certificate) of compliance with Volumes 1 & 2 of the Wisconsin State Electrical Code before energizing a service.

How is the electrical permit and electrical inspection fee determined?

  1. The permit administration fee is $50
  2. application help fee $50 if needed
  3. The Plan review fee is $80/hr if needed
  4. The inspection fee is $80 per hour (minimum of 1 hour) plus $1 per mile round trip per inspection.
